About / Club History
The Galveston County Model Railroad Club was established in 1989. The members built our first 6 foot layout at the Galveston Railroad Museum. During those early years we were eager to continue building but the club was unable to expand the club layouts with the limited space provided by the museum. We found a new home with plenty of expansion room in the Galvez Mall in Galveston and remained there until it’s closure in 1995.
In 1991 the Railroad club started building a modular railroad layout. Modular railroad layouts consist of components that are joined together to make a larger layout. Each module is normally two feet wide and four feet long. This makes it convenient for the club members to work on a module in their own home. Once the module is working properly it’s joined to other club modules to run a complete layout.
After the closure of the Galvez Mall in 1995 the club needed a location for the layouts. We found our new home on the second floor
of the Texas City Museum in Texas City, Texas. The museum was located on the first floor of the old J C Penny building on 6th street
and the second floor was vacant and available. The second floor was in need of a lot of TLC by the members to bring It up to code.
After years of clean up and refurbishing the club has enjoyed its new home and we are very proud of the way it appears today.
Since 1996 the club has been located on the second floor of the old JC Penny building in Texas City, Texas.. now the beautiful newly refurbished Texas City Museum. Our traveling layout located on the right as you enter the club area has won several awards throughout the years. Galveston County Railroad Club has the largest operating model railroad in South East Texas running in over 5,000 square feet.
The club operates many different scales: Z, N, HO, O, and G. in both DC and DCC. An “S Scale” and HOn3 layout was added this past year.
