About / Club History
The Galveston County Model Railroad Club was established in 1989. The clubs first project was to build a layout located in the Galveston Railroad Museum. Space was limited in the museum and we were only allotted enough space to build a 6 foot module. We were eager to continue building but we were unable to expand the club layouts with the limited space provided by the museum. The club relocated to a new home with plenty of room for expansion in the Galvez Mall in Galveston and remained there until it’s closure in 1995.
In 1991 the Railroad club started building a modular railroad layout. Modular railroad layouts consist of components that are joined together to make a larger layout. Each module is normally two feet wide and four feet long. This makes it convenient for the club members to work on a module in their own home. Once the module is working properly it’s joined to other club modules to run a complete layout.
After the closure of the Galvez Mall in 1995 the club found a new home on the second floor of the Texas City Museum in Texas City, Texas. The museum was located on the first floor of the old J C Penny building on 6th street and the second floor was vacant and available. The second floor was in need of a lot of refurbishing and TLC by the members. After many years of clean up, maintenance and upgrades to bring it up to code, the club has enjoyed its new home and we are very proud of the way it appears today.
Since the relocation in 1996 the club has been on the second floor of the old JC Penny building which is now the beautiful newly refurbished Texas City Museum in Texas City, Texas. Our traveling layout located on the right as you enter the club area has won many awards throughout the years. Galveston County Railroad Club has the largest operating model railroad in South East Texas running in over 5,000 square feet.
Our club members have demonstrated model railroads to children's hospitals, museums, train shows, community events, and more. The Galveston County Model Railroad Club was also very honored to be invited to the George Bush Library in College Station, Texas to display their traveling N-scale layout and demonstrate an O-scale DCC module. Many people visited the library over the course of several weekends and had an opportunity to view the model layouts as well as the numerous railroad memorabilia exhibits on display throughout the library. The GCMRRC would like to extend a special thank you to the George Bush Library staff for the opportunity to be part of this railroading event.
The club operates many different scales: Z Scale, N Scale, HO Gauge, O Gauge, S Gauge, HOn3 and G Scale in both DC and DCC.
